"La Rue Du Chat Qui Pêche" - the shortest street in Paris; it's just
an alleyway really, on the Left Bank, two minutes down from the Place St.
Michel and that shop that sells huge mushroom pizzas (filling and warm on
a cold autumn night when you've three hours to kill before the boat-train
leaves for Dieppe) - a tiny, nothing-y alleyway full of messy backdoor
clatter and the smell of restaurant kitchens, it runs down from La Rue de
la Huchette's lights and tourist bustle to the Siene, somewhere between
Pont St. Michel and Petit Pont, where the river divides round the île
- and none of this is especially relevant but - our English compilations
have always been named after local roads, places, that's all - Bristol
streets - and - I remember, before we left England, the Japanese guidebooks
we borrowed being full of terrifyingly helpful advice like THEY DON'T HAVE
STREET NAMES, and DON'T TRY TO CATCH A BUS or you'll never be seen again -
and I remember we wandered hopelessly in circles in the rain outside
Shibuya station on our first night in Tokyo, trying to find the way back to
our hotel; and one afternoon while Heavenly soundchecked we thought we'd
walk to Roppongi, but just found ourselves an hour later trudging south-
west under some huge expressway that roared on above us forever - so - well,
maybe that goes some way to explaining our compilation title - and hopefully
you'll like these songs - all by bands new to the label, though some of you
may have seen Blueboy when they were over this February - and - well, here's
a few words about each band - just in Japanese, so they won't know what
we've said...
