I've walked down the streets too, and I don't need reminding - what I need is insight and somebody saying something new, something CONSTRUCTIVE for once...safer public transport, better street-lighting - oh but this is REAL politics, and that's boring and grown-up...this is aimed as much at us as at you...and get hassled, or else you go with some horrible ex-boyfriend because he's the only person who wants to...having to...with him and ...fact he'll enevitably refuse to get out of the car when you get back unless you - or else HAVING TO GET HOME ON YOUR OWN and missing the end to run for the last bus...then the scary... hell walk past the park to your flat or else taxis, meaning money, meaning you can only go to half as many gigs...it was going to be him out front topless and in cycling shorts, cavorting, pouting, and then us serious at the back, the girls in power...EXPLOITATION? role models label-manager guitar-hero sound-engineer songwriter promoter producer role models PA secretary singer receptionist cover-star singer press agent singer girls singing boys' words the illusion of a female voice the illusion of freedom of speech the illusion of women in POWER...her singing, the boys at the back behind their keyboards - same old stereotypes getting re-inforced - but these are intelligent people, WHY DO THEY DO IT? So another thousand young girls watching see there's no place for them in popmusic because they don't have long blond hair and perfect skin and would look fuckawful in a low-cut mini-dress? CAN'T YOU SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING? Can't you see how wrong it is? WHY DO YOU DO IT? "We're not a politcal band" - But you are... taking a past history of abuse/victimisation as proof of an interesting person with something interesting to say, and seeing any woman won't/can't fill the alloted role of victim as artistically inferior...I want to be interesting because of myself, not because of what some man did to me...
